Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of the State of Delaware
The Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Delaware (MWPHGL of DE) has a rich and distinguished history rooted in the traditions of Prince Hall Freemasonry. Established to serve the African American community in Delaware, its founding reflects the desire for brotherhood, self-improvement, and community service in the face of social challenges and racial barriers.
Prince Hall Freemasonry, named after its founder Prince Hall, was created in the late 18th century to provide African Americans with the opportunity to practice Freemasonry, an organization that had largely excluded them. The movement quickly spread across the United States, with African American lodges being established in many states.
The MWPHGL of Delaware was officially chartered in 1849, becoming the governing body for Prince Hall lodges within the state. It provided a foundation for African American men to engage in fellowship, moral development, and civic responsibility at a time when segregation and discrimination were widespread. Over the years, the Grand Lodge has grown, overseeing the development of subordinate lodges and playing an important role in promoting education, charity, and leadership within the community.
Today, the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Delaware continues its commitment to the principles of Freemasonry: brotherhood, truth, and relief. Through charitable initiatives, mentorship, and educational programs, it remains a vital force for positive change and empowerment in Delaware. The Grand Lodge honors the legacy of Prince Hall and continues to uphold the values of unity, respect, and progress for all.
